Pinaymootang Will Host First Ever Winter Games for First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory

Chiefs of First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory announced at their annual Grand Council and Treaty Gathering at Clear Lake Reserve 61A that Treaty 2 Territory Winter Games 2020 will be held at Pinaymootang,

The announcement came on August 28, the second day of the Grand Council. When Pinaymootang First Nation Chief Garnet Woodhouse announced that his community is proud to host the games.

“Today is a great day for our youth, sport and Pinaymootang. Our sports and games in our territory is the second part of education and it is important to our government of Treaty 2 territory”, Chief Woodhouse said in his announcement.

The purpose of the Winter Games is to celebrate young Anishinaabe through sport, activates and recreation which will promote Mino-Bimaadiziwin — “The Good Life” in the Anishinaabe language. Some activities of the Winter Games may include hockey, trap setting, snowshoeing, snowboarding, skiing to name a few.

The First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory governing body has launched a Youth and Sport Council and positions will be filled from the communities of the Treaty 2 Territory who decide to form a part of the collective nation of “First Nations in Treaty 2 Territory which is now discussing a nation-to-nation relationship with Canada.

These communities presently include Ebb & Flow, Dauphin River, Keeseekoowenin, Lake Manitoba, Lake St. Martin, Little Saskatchewan, O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi, Pinaymootang, Skownan and Tootinaowasiibeeng. Many of the other First Nations in the territory are expected to add their names.
