Treaty 1 Territory – Roughly 400 people took part in the Grandmothers walk today in Winnipeg, Manitoba in a gesture of solidarity with other Indigenous organizations to shed light on the number of children under the care of Child and Family Services who will not be with their families on Mother’s Day.
Presently there are over 11,000 children under the care of various Child and Family services agencies in the province, with 90% of them being Indigenous.
The secondary purpose of the walk was to shed light upon the upcoming federal bill C-92 which was drafted without consulting FNiT2T and other First nations across the province.
FNiT2T was represented by various office staff, community members and Lake Manitoba Chief Cornell McLean, Child and Families portfolio holder for FNiT2T.
