Annual Gift from the Queen kicks off Treaty days at Lake Manitoba

June 20, 2019

Treaty 2 Territory – Like all our First Nations treaty payment is significant to the relationship with the Queen. As part of the making of Treaty 2 at Manitoba House on 21 August 1871 our descendants made sure protection of the lands was secured among many other life provisions.

Now, many years later, treaty compensation has never been implemented for the lands taken up for settlement and immigration. Our First Nations still honour parts of the treaty with the gift from the Queen. The $5 annuity is well disputed but that’s an article for another day, today was about Lake Manitoba First Nation welcoming their members and presenting them with flour and the gift from the Queen.

“Today and this weekend is always special to see our members come together”’ said Chief McLean.

After speaking with Chief McLean he reiterated that the FNiT2T protocol signed most recent with Canada is about implementing the treaty and to settle the unfinished Inherent rights and Treaty business.
