Treaty 2 territory – Children, Families, Life Givers, Grandmothers, MMIWG, Genocide, and Restoring our Matriarchal Purpose

Our children, families and Nations are sacred. Life givers are the matriarchs of our Nations. Matriarchs are the head of the home and family. We are first teachers and nurturers. Older matriarchs are ancestrally identified as clan mothers or grandmothers who directed and guided the clan leaders of the tribe. Matriarchs were profoundly involved in every aspect of life of the tribe or Nation.

Today, we now sit in a space where it has been found through Canada’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Inquiry Final Report that what has happened; what is still happening to our Indigenous girls, women and two-spirited is genocide. We have always known this. We knew this when one of our first of thousands of children was taken away and our women, girls and two-spirited became missing and murdered. We knew this when our matriarchal roles were interrupted through colonial settler law.

Canada is responsible for supporting us with making things right in order to heal from the genocide, intergenerational trauma, loss of language, identity, culture, and restoring our matriarchal purpose.

The healing, sharing of information, access to help, and restoration of our ancestral way of being that is required, will bring back the balance so that our children can be brought back to our families.

It is time to go back to the beginning and restore our ancestral family circle and to be mindful in respecting the diversity among our Nations.

We are returning to the land to create safe space to share, speak and interpret our languages, in order to heal and to be able to see ourselves in the next set of footprints we will make for the next generations to follow.
