November 8, 2019

Treaty 2 Territory – Lake St. Martin First Nation gather at Canad Inn Garden City to dispute being cut-off Canadian Red Cross assistance on December 31st, 2019.

Approximately 200 members of the Lake St. Martin gathered along with leadership and legal representation at Canad Inn. Clarence Morse of Lake St. Martin First Nation says “we’re here today to request an extension of assistance from the Red Cross. Not all members have a home to return to.” The Canadian Red Cross will cease assistance to members of Lake St. Martin First Nation on December 31st, 2019. This would mean members who do not have a home in the community will remain in Winnipeg and place on Provincial welfare. Members have been displaced since the 2011 flooding, and the fear for Lake St. Martin First Nation is members will continue to be displaced under Provincial welfare.

Lake St. Martin First Nation, along with their legal team, will continue to seek assistance from the Canadian Red Cross until all members return home in their community.
