Nation-Based Sovereign-Based Government

Child Welfare Forum at Mikinak Lodge (LLL Lodge)

January 23, 2020

Treaty 2 Territory – The Local Nation Helpers return this week on January 22nd to continue on with their work on their Constitutional Development. We looked to our Peoples responsibility when it comes to good child rearing in our Past, Present and into the Future. The Children were highly valued because they were the key to future sustainability and strength of the community. All community members shared a duty to nurture, teach, guide and protect children and youth.

In our journey to reclaim our sovereignty and self-determination as a Nation, we are reminding all of us that the First Nations are in the best position to make decisions that effect the wellbeing and social harmony of our children, youth, families and communities. First Nations are in the best position to lead the development of child welfare laws, policies, research, and practices that affects their communities.

With our Knowledge Holders Council we are grateful to hear and learn from Elder Louis Malcolm from Ebb & Flow First Nation and Elder Harvey Nepinak from Skownan, sharing their life long experience on the path to self-determination for our First Nations. We are also grateful to hear from our current leaders in child welfare Stella Bone of WRCFS, Emma Edwards of ACFS and Lori Fontaine who are working with other organizations and agencies “An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families” Together we will claim our destiny and be that great Ancestor for the children, children, children to come. – Miigwech!
