Information for FNT2T Members on COVID 19

March 16, 2020

Treaty 2 Territory – March 16, 2020, the number of confirmed cases of COVID 19 in Manitoba is 8. Some tips to avoid the COVID-19 virus is limit visiting, limit your time away from home, and wash your hands with soap on a consistent basis – you will be prepared.

Traditionally, Anishinaabe people cleans their homes with prayer, smudge, and medicine. Elder from Lake Manitoba First Nation – Marlene, shared a teaching and medicine with the Anishinaabe of our territories: hang ribbon above your entry doors on the right side. The ribbon is red and black, and 7 inches in length. This will keep away the negative spirit of COVID-19. Another traditional method is to boil cedar medicine. Add cedar to low temperature boiling water. Do this for as long as there is medicine (water) in the pot, and feel free to add water to extend the duration. The cedar medicine spreads out throughout your home and cleanses the air. You may smudge with sage, cedar, sweetgrass, and tobacco. These are the four sacred medicines of our Anishinaabe ways. If you are feeling sick, you may drink traditional medicine. The late Donald Daniels of Long Plain First Nation shared Heavens Medicine with the Anishinaabe of the territories. The teaching I received from Donald Daniels was this medicine was gifted to our people by the creator. Heavens Medicine fights against viruses such as the flu and other related flu viruses. Cedar tea is another traditional medicine: boil cedar in water (medicine). This is cedar tea. You may add honey to your cedar tea to sweeten the taste. Children love the teachings of our people, our Anishinaabe ways, feel free to teach your children.

Anishinaabe people are welcomed and encouraged to use western medicine too. If you feel flu symptoms, such as a fever, shortness of breath, sore throat, aches and pains, please call Health Links at 204-788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257. Do not panic. The best way for our nations to keep safe and virus free is to keep away from large gatherings or traveling. Remember to wash your hands consistently.

Leadership of the FNT2T will be releasing more information on Tuesday, March 17th. Miigwetch!
