February 1, 2021

Treaty 2 Territory – On Wednesday, January 27, 2021 the Knowledge Council met to support and provide ancestral guidance to the Keepers and Helpers that is currently leading the Children, Families and Nation Circle.

The opening statements included sacred knowledge exchange of natural medicines and positive messages to stay healthy and strong during the pandemic. The Knowledge Council intellectual ancestral property was shared, respected and celebrated in an Anishinaabe wellbeing context.

“Staying healthy and building up our immune systems with our Anishinaabe mashkiki so that we can be here to help defend the rights of our grandchildren is one of the many ways we can exercise our sovereignty” – Knowledge Council Chair, Louie Malcolm

The Anishinaabe Wiikaani-aabiwaad session for the day also encompassed:

  • Bill C-92 “An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis Children”
  • A brief update on the phased-in approach on the Coordination Agreement
  • Confidentiality Agreement
  • Current State of Manitoba’s lack of involvement to the Tripartite discussions.

“The duty to act honourably goes well beyond a procedural obligation to consult with Treaty 2 Territory when either the Federal Crown or delegated Provincial Crown proposes to act in a way that infringes upon our section 35 rights”. “The Anishinaabe honour that I have is to assert the rights of children, our elders remind us that our children are gifts from Creator”. “We must protect them because to us, our children are sacred – they are our medicine”– Ogichidaa Eugene Eastman.
