Treaty 2 Territory – In a letter to Canada from Grand Chief Eastman, the Government of FNT2T remains diligent on meaningful implementation of the Treaty-Crown relationship. In brief, our political strategy speaks to the direct relationship between the FNT2T Governing Council and the Government of Canada Cabinet Ministers.

In the context of Treaty relations and aligning with your mandate as the Minister( Bill Blair) of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness – it is our understanding that your role is integral to carrying out constitutional obligations under sec. 35.  Essential to governing and fulfilling our part of those obligatory requirements.

“I am pleased to share with you that the Treaty 2 Territory has established a nation-based Peacemaking Circle that includes a peacekeeping function for our Treaty 2 territory. One of our main priorities is the recent formation of our culturally appropriate, responsive and respectful peacekeeping (policing service) model within our Peacemaking Onankonehkawin (Law)”, Grand Chief Eugene Eastman

To this end, it is of paramount importance that political engagement occurs between our governments as we proceed. Our main objective for this meeting is to discuss our involvement while our peacekeeping is formed in the co-development of the legislative framework for First Nation’s Policing which recognizes First Nation’s policing as an essential service.
