Wild Fires force evacuations of nations in the territory

May 25, 2021

Treaty 2 Territory –  On Wednesday, May 20th, 2021 five First Nations started evacuating the Elderly, people with illness and families with small babies due to the forest fires and heavy smoke. The fires started in the Homebrook area along the Waterhen Road. Late Wednesday afternoon with the strong north winds the fire jumped highway #6 onto the east side and North of Lake St. Martin First Nation and Dauphin River First Nation.

The Chief and Council of Lake St. Martin started evacuating it’s members to Winnipeg due to the heavy smoke and fire. The Dauphin River, Little Saskatchewan, Pinaymootang and Skownan First Nations also evacuated their members with some going to hotels in Dauphin as well as Winnipeg. Rain is in the forecast for the weekend which will help to stop the spread of more fires. Praying for the people in these areas to stay safe. Miigwetch to all the Firefighters and leadership for keeping all members safe and evacuated when needed.
