Treaty 2 Territory, on September 22, 2021, I presented at the “Reclaiming Our Voices Woman’s Gathering” in Waywayseecappo First Nation. It was such as beautiful event as I could feel the power of the women under that white tent. Before I presented, I had the opportunity to hear a story from a residential school survivor. Her story of resiliency, and the love she has for her community is remarkable. I worked with her in the past, so it was an honour to hear her story. I have so much respect for her, and she is another example of the internal power that every woman have within.
I presented on the importance of identity and how it is the catalyst for self-empowerment. We as woman have been displaced from our roles as decision makers and this had a detrimental effect on our community. Colonization has tried to strip that role from us as matriarchs. I talked about my own personal story of struggles, trauma, and addictions, and how it is possible to heal from them. I explained the solution to overcome trauma and addictions is within each one of us. The personal power that we have within is connected to Spirit, and when we believe, we will achieve.
