Care and Protection of the Natural World Circle meets to discuss Moose Management in Treaty 2 Territory

October 6, 2021

Treaty 2 Territory – The FNT2T Care and Protection of the Natural World Circle met virtually on Wednesday October 6, 2021. This gathering was hosted by Keeseekoowenin Nation. There were representatives from Keeseekoowenin, Dauphin River and Tootinaowaziibeeng. There were two main agenda items that were discussed:

  • Moose Management in the Treaty 2 Territory
  • Aki Guardian Training Program

Circle Keeper Ron Missyabit chaired the meeting and updated the Circle Members on the latest developments in the Moose Manage strategies and what some First Nations are doing to assert their inherent right to harvest moose in the territory. There are different beliefs and some are contrary to the provincial ban on moose hunting in the designated areas in Manitoba; which have been used for generations by the Indigenous people for food sustenance. There will be upcoming sessions in the nations to develop a Treaty 2 Moose Management plan.

There will also be a Aki Guardian Training program with the Earth Lodge and Care and Protection of the Natural World Circle developing the curriculum for members of the nations to be trained in the area of land management and with an Indigenous perspective being incorporated. Please look for upcoming sessions in your nation.
