Peacemaking Onankonehkawan Gets Passed by Governing Council

Treaty 2 Territory- On November 18, 2021, the Governing Council gathered to discuss the Treaty 2 Territory and government. There was discussion on unity and moving forward as a government. There were several resolutions passed including the Peacemaking Onankonehkawin. The Peacemaking Keeper provided the final draft of the Peacemaking Onankonehkawin, an overview of the law, and resolution 2021-11-18-005.

The Peacemaking Keeper and Executive informed the Governing Council the Peacemaking Onankonehkawin was completed which included going through ceremony. The Peacemaking Framework went through a Pipe Ceremony in the Spring. In addition, the Governing Council held a Pipe Ceremony that morning for the resolutions that were presented.

The Peacemaking Keeper provided an overview of the laws which includes the laws of the Seven Circles of Peacemaking. The Seven Circles of Peacemaking includes the Lynx Circle (Prevention and Early Intervention); the Deer Circle (Restorative Peacemaking); the Eagle Circle (wellbeing and programming); the Turtle Circle (Anishinaabe Law Centre and Registrar); the Bear Circle (Peacekeeping and Wellness Supervision); the Loon Circle (Legal Tribunal); and Crane Circle (Appeals). The overview included the law’s purpose, section in the Peacemaking Onankonehkawin, the meaning, timing, and outcome.

In addition, the Peacemaking Keeper read the Peacemaking Onankonehkawan resolution as presented. The resolution was motioned by Nigaannii Catcheway and carried by the Governing Council. As a result of passing the Peacemaking Onankonehkawan, the Treaty 2 Government can now administer a Peacemaking legal System and enforce Anishinaabe Laws.
