Peacemaking Training: Opportunity & Foundation for Implementation

November 26, 2021

Treaty 2 – On November 18, 2021, The Peacemaking Onankonehkawinin Resolution was passed by the FNT2T Governing Council. This is an exciting time for Treaty 2 member because we will now focus on operationalizing the Peacemaking system throughout the territory. This means we will begin working with each of the nations to develop the Peacemaking system that meets their needs and draws on their strengths, while using the Peacemaking Onankonehkawinan as a framework.

As noted in the resolution: Peacemaking Onankonehkawinan is founded on an Anishinaabe principles of Mino Bimaadiziwin and a legal framework which includes: Spiritual, Natural, Customary, and Spiritual Laws in accordance with Mino Bimaadiziwin which means to live in alignment with the good life, and Relational Laws of  Aang-waa-misin (Peace), Mino-aani-gidoowin (Balance), Chi-sh-wi-ding (Harmony) and; Chi-nah-ni-chi-kan (Natural Order); Customary Laws are the nation’s traditional way of maintaining order while Human Laws are administered by the Nation, Territorial, Provincial, and Federal laws.

The next steps for Peacemaking will also include the creation the Peacemaking Certificate program in partnership with The Earth Lodge. We are also exploring the possibility of a partnership with Assiniboine Community College (ACC). The Peacemaking Certificate program will provide accredited training for Treaty 2 citizens centered on our Peacemaking Onankonehkawinin, Restorative Justice, Governance, Self-Determination, professional writing and communication skills, conflict resolution, to name a few. Once interested citizens complete the Peacemaking foundational training, there will be opportunities to further your training in other specialty areas so that you can fulfill roles in Treaty 2 circles such as Peacekeeping (policing), Child Families and Nations, or Care and Protection of the Natural World, for example. The development of the training will not only provide citizens an opportunity to study and acquire skills through classes, culture camps, and practicum; but the goal is to have employment opportunities in your local nations where you will operate the Peacemaking System and Circles.

The Peacemaking Circle looks forward to building a future together with Treaty 2 members!
