January 25, 2022

Treaty 2 Territory – The Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan / FNT2T Government continues to
move forward with exercising sovereign governance. The role and leadership of the
Council Chairs is integral to upholding the Nation’s vision and direction.

Ogichidaa Cornell McLean, in his address, provided the message of “strong nation-based
unity” during the gathering. Within that message Ogichidaa also conveyed gratitude for the guidance and modeling of leadership that each Council Chair brings forth while serving in their respective council.

Our Nation is governed by Onankonehkawin which includes  7 (seven) Councils within our
inherent and sovereign government structure. As part of ensuring accountability, meetings
are set up to provide updates and seek direction on the Onankonekawin process. The
Grand Council meets once a year. When the Grand Council isn’t meeting, the Governing
Council made up of the Ogemas and Chairpeople from each member Council meet.

The Nation’s Councils Chairs are represented by; Governing Council, Executive Council,
(Ogichidaa), Grandmothers Council, Knowledge Council, Men’s Council, Ikwewak Council and Youth Council.

In the coming months, the Councils will be gathering to discuss climate change, advancing
our strategic plan, Unfinished Treaty Business and building a solid government.

Louie Malcolm, Chair of Knowledge Council spoke on the importance of moving forward to
revitalize and share our sacred Anishinaabemowin and to instill the Anishinaabe spirit into
our laws, for our people.

The Keepers and Helpers continue to support the Councils and brave the path forward to
promote the Anishinaabe Way of Mino Bimaadiziwin and protect Anishinaabek Akii.
