The Ogemaag call to lead with “Gizhediziiwin” to guide our relations Off-and-On-the-Ice

February 22, 2022

Treaty 2 Territory – On Saturday 19 February 2022, the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League hosted a regular season game against visiting team Waywayseecappo Wolverines in the Treaty 2 Territory.

Upon conclusion of the 3-2 game, with a fiery penalty-filled third period, an incident occurred involving a Kings player appearing to make a racist gesture towards one or more of the Wolverines players.  A 10-minute Gross Misconduct penalty was assessed to the offending player, resulting in an automatic 1-game suspension and a disciplinary review to be completed.  The player may have reacted to the tensions between them and another player, however, it does not justify reacting in this way, to hurt or offend.

“This is much larger than what was displayed here, it is the view of Ogemaag that there is a responsibility on the city of Dauphin, and its citizens to set the example and implement the Truth and Reconciliation, Calls to Action.  The Anishinaabek of Treaty 2 Territory are here to advance and facilitate respectful and kind relations with the Kings and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.”

– Ogichidaa Cornell McLean Ogema, Animozeebeeng Anishinaabe

On August 28, 2019, during the FNT2T Grand Council at Lake Manitoba, a resolution was passed that supports mandatory Lateral Kindness Training for T2T.  Lateral Kindness Training is provided through the T2T Earth Lodge and Life Long Learning Centre.  The training is open to non-Anishinaabe people within the territory.  We must remember the TRC’s 94 calls to action including Sport and Reconciliation (87-91).
