FNT2T working with Whitmore school on supports and reconciliation for students

May 31, 2022

Treaty 2 Territory – FNT2T Internal/External met with Melissa Ferland at the Whitmore school in Dauphin to discuss developing a working relationship with FNT2T and other service providers in the Dauphin area. There is over 90% indigenous student population at Whitmore school. There is a need for support for the students that attend which include lunch program, culture-based learning, family supports for single parents. Melissa Ferland is heading up this initiative (Valuing the whole child program coordinator) with Ms. Bennett Kindergarten teacher  in developing a full-time kindergarten for the children to have more access to learning the basic skills for the next grades of schooling. Melissa was successful in obtaining funding to hire a teacher and aide to make it possible to have kindergarten everyday for the children. There is always a need for funding and supports as there are many needs for the children attending the school.

FNT2T will be supporting Whitmore school in accessing supports from service providers and other organizations. FNT2T will also be setting up an information booth at the family day planned for June 24, 2022. There will be other service providers and organizations handing our information on their programs and services. FNT2T looks forward to working with Whitmore school and moving forward in reconciliation.
