Treaty 2 Territory Ogimaag call for “Gizhaadiziiwin & Debwewin” from the Dauphin Minor Hockey Association

June 1, 2022

The Governing Council and Ogichidaa of Treaty 2 Territory

Treaty 2 Territory- The Treaty 2 Territory Ogimaag are calling for accountability, equality, and to act with kindness from the Dauphin Minor Hockey Association (DMHA).

Recently, an Anishinaabe citizen and member of the Government of Treaty 2 Territory experienced racist comments, unfair treatment of their child’s playing time, forced volunteerism, and is impacted by the direct and indirect culture of discrimination from the DMHA Board.

Upon receiving a complaint, DMHA brought in an outside third-party consulting company to examine all the evidence and take statements then provide a summary and recommendations to all involved parties.

In response to the summary and recommendations report, the DMHA Board of Directors have proposed an amendment to their policies that will result in a system of forced volunteerism.  At the time of publication, there have been no other proposals put forth to address concerns of racism, lateral kindness and ways to improve inclusion and promote wellbeing.

However difficult it may be to have conversations related to racism, discrimination or otherwise, what has happened and what continues to happen is unacceptable and should be taken seriously, especially when it comes to the sacredness of our children’s lives – stated Ogichidaa Cornell McLean.

The Ogimaag are calling on the Dauphin Minor Hockey Association to have a dialogue to address all forms of racism and is ready and willing to join the Dauphin Minor Hockey Association on a collaborative journey towards accountability, equality, and kindness to ensure that “Every Child-Matter’s” becomes a reality.

Lateral Kindness Training is provided through the T2T Earth Lodge and Lifelong Learning Centre. The training is open to non-Anishinaabe people within the territory. We must remember the Truth and Reconciliation 94 CALLS to Action including Sport and Reconciliation (87-91).
